Superman Returns

To be honest I was not looking forward to this movie very much, but the teaser trailer does it for me. It looks great. Listen to the words of Superman’s father, esp. toward the end and why Kal-El (Superman) was sent to earth. Just awesome. If you have missed it, check out the teaser here.

Wait a minute, WAIT A MINUTE!! That’s practically plagiarism!

I’m not too excited about it either. They did use Marlon Brando’s speech from the Chris Reeve film. But I didn’t like the Chris Reeve movie, it was too campy. So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I think Spider-man has been pretty well done and I like the new Batman because neither is going for the campy stuff. I hope they do the same with Superman

You are SO right about Jor-El’s comments. Goodness.

    So Kal-El is, at best, a four-pointer?

Oops, I should have said Jor-El, right? Kal-El dad is the one talking about humanity’s capacity for good…

Even a Calvinist could speak of a man’s capacity for good. In one sense we have the capacity for good (natural ability) but not the will (moral ability) Or, we could speak in relative terms and say that because man is made in the image of God even the unregenerate often “does good.”

I think the Jor-El narrative is mor exciting at a more basic level. That a father sent his son to save the world. That Superman is a Christ-figure is common knowledge, but the upcoming movie can be a new and interesting inroad to conversations about Jesus.

I agree. It’s so rare that I’m taken seriously that I never expect it. Good comment.
