Joyful Noise

From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad
Ps. 45:8

At Grace we are blessed to have some outstanding musicians. We sing a lot of hymns, some of the more solid current music being produced for worship, and a few songs our worship leader has written as well. The musical style of our worship isĀ  somewhat unique. We usually use acoustic guitar(s), bass, mandolin, Dobro, hand drums and arrange the hymns in a way that gives them a more current sound. Chris Walke plays… well he plays a lot of things, but he usually plays the Dobro. He e-mailed me this morning linking to a short clip of Jerry Douglas (his Dobro hero). Check it out, especially if you are unfamiliar with this instrument. Follow it through to the end. Absolutely amazing. Link: Jerry Douglas on YouTube.

  1. Wow, that guy has got some serious talent. I’m not into the ’sound’ all that much, but he has definitely got it going on!

  2. Joe, I’ve been listening to his stuff since I was a kid. Thanks for the link. There was another one I saw there with Jerry Douglas playing with Union Station at the CMT awards that was exceptional as well.

  3. This is the only place I can be mentioned in the same paragraph as Jerry Douglas! Whenever I start to feel too good about my playing, which is rare, all I gotta do is listen to something Jerry plays on. Then I realize what a hack player I am. But I love hackin’!

  4. Man, we all think you are awesome. And we are looking forward to seeing you play at Chord on Blues this spring/summer.

  5. Must be the name Jerry. Here’s a clip of Jerry Donahue, session player and member of a band called the Hellecasters (3 session guitarist giants - Jerry Donahue, John Jorgenson, Will Ray). He’s apparently just settin’ in his living room pickin’. It’s this level of musicianship that makes me tear my hair out - like on the Jerry Douglas clip, watch Donahue’s hands: they look like they’re hardly doin’ a thing! [link]
