A Week of Repentance and Reconciliation

by Joe Thorn on March 6, 2006

March 5th through 11th is our Week of Repentance and Reconciliation. This is a time preceding our communion service at Grace and is a call to examine ourselves, our lives and our relationships. After the service today a few people asked for additional thoughts on making the most of this week. My encouragement is to be in prayer throughout the week, in conversation about these thing with your friends, and to be responding to the things God brings to mind concerning your need for repentance and/or reconciliation. I believe the linked resources will be helpful to all interested. They are all very brief, except for the last link by Piper. Read and meditate on one at a time during each work day of the week.

The Lord’s Supper as Worship, by John Piper

Joe, how often does Grace partake of the Lord’s Supper?

  • http://www.joethorn.net Joe Thorn

    About every 6 weeks.

Any particular reason for 6 as oppossed to 1 or 4 or 9, etc?

I’m interested in how various churches decide with what frequency to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

Since we are not convinced that the bible tells us exactly how often to do it, we chose six. Every week feels too often for us, but anything less than every six weeks is not often enough. This is currently how we are doing it, but we are a pretty flexible group and things may change in the future. We have had communion several times in the context of a meal following the service, we have done it several different ways during the service as well. We have only been worshipping for 3 years this summer, so things are likely to continue to develop for us as we grow.
