Resolved Again

by Joe Thorn on April 9, 2006

Late last summer a few bloggers began promoting the idea of submitting some meaningful resolutions at the 2006 SBC (I hit the topic here and here). Tom Ascol has a resolution for your consideration, A Resolution on Integrity in Reporting. No, it’s not a corrective for Fox News or NBC. It deals with church membership, discipline and reporting. I say, send it in Tom. It is relevant, meaningful and needed.

Wow, I’m looking forward to covering that one. The blogs may be able to help get this one out of commitee.

I think also that all of the Southern Baptists bloggers should get together the Monday before, or Tuesday morning to discuss being a SB and blogger, and how we can use our blogs effectively (to influence the convention for good and to start good conversation). And I think it’d be awesome to meet all of y’all. I’ll probably be the youngest guy there…

Has there recently been any resolutions on the issue of alcohol for our NAMB and IMB personnel? A friend has been half joking, half serious for a while now about proposing a resolution that would take away those dogmatic statements about alcohol for NAMB and IMB missionaries.

For myself I think there can be ways to skirt the issue of alcohol with our friends who do drink. But I for one am a bit weary of hearing our missionaries say to address it like this, when asked if you want a drink you say, “No thank you, I am a Christian and do not drink” (this is a word for word quote from a missionary). Do we not see how that equates alcohol consumption with not being a Christian?

Anyway, anyone know of any resolutions in this regard? Does anyone else think it hampers our personnel? Just curious.

I don’t think a resolution like that would make it past the committee, nor do I think it would pass if it made it to the floor. No way.

And yeah. Every missionary I have sat down with believes the position on alcohol is at best an inconvenience when on the field, or worse it hinders work. I am sure there are many who don’t see it that way, but I have not yet met them.
