Sharing the City

ChickenI have loved photography since I was a kid, and though I played around with it in the 80’s I never took it seriously. In December of 2005 I decided to buy the best camera I could afford and jump into the art form with both feet. Early this year I was invited to submit pictures for a local gallery that will celebrate DeKalb city’s sesquicentennial anniversary. If any of my photos are chosen they will wind up in the gallery, and then in the history/archives department permanently.

Honestly, I don’t think any of my photos will be chosen, though I would be thrilled if even one made it in. The point is to share one of the ways I have found to plug in and participate in my community. Even if my pictures don’t make it this time around, I have been able to meet other local photographers and artists. It is something I love, and it is building relationships. You can check out what I submitted as a static page or a slideshow.

  1. hey Joe,
Your photography is awesome. It inspires me to go out and shoot more often. I Hope some get in.

  2. Joe, you’ve inspired Leanne and I (OK, mainly me, but she’s always said she wanted to take up photography and is excited about the purchase) to buy a new camera–a Canon Rebel XT, which should arrive tomorrow. Now let’s see if we can capture some pictures as evocative as many of your’s.

  3. Joe,

I think you would agree it’s not about ‘taking pictures’ but about finding a way to involve yourself in your community. People look at pastors as if they are incapable of having fun and only wanting to talk about Jesus. When we make a concerted effort to interact with our community, people will see pastors, and Christians in general, as real people.

With great sincerity I applaude you for finding a niche in your town and exploiting (in a good way) it for the sake of the gospel. May God bring forth a harvest from your involvement.

    Blessings,
    Jason Sampler
