Side of Catch Up

by Joe Thorn on June 13, 2006

Ok, Steve and I have some time to relax this evening and blog a bit. Our pizza has just arrived, so we need to take it upstairs to eat. Here are some of my thoughts about the SBC so far.

Meeting People
I mentioned that the best part of coming to the SBC is meeting and dialoguing with others. I simply cannot mention everyone we spent time with – too many good people and conversing with others. I’ll only mention a few.

Steve and I were able to connect with Tom Ascol and Tom Nettles (and their wives). I have known, and sat under the teaching of, Dr. Nettles for years, but this was my first time meeting Tom Ascol in person. For those who think the Founders guys are a bunch of angry theologians you should spend some time getting to know these men. They are thoughtful, gracious and fun. True, some Calvinists need to take their cue from guys like this, and not guys like… well – you get the idea.

We were able to chat with others profs like Drs. Ray Van Neste and Greg Thornberry (Union), and Dr. Mark DeVine (Midwestern). Having interacted with Ray and Mark on the blog, I was not surprised to find them both exciting to talk to. They are scholars with humble attitudes and I was so blessed to speak with them. Greg Thornberry is not only the dean of the School of Christian Studies at Union University, he is also the nicest guy I spoke with at the SBC. Steve expressed it this way, “I wish Greg and Kimberly [Greg's wife and Dean of Students at Union] could adopt me and be my house parents or something. They’re that nice.”

We had the chance to connect briefly with Dr. Greg Wills and a few others from Southern as well as Mark Dever.

I am telling you about these guys because they are all approachable, real people. These are some of the men that make me excited about what we’re doing here.

We were able to grab lunch with friends: yesterday with Eddie and Kelley Coakley and today with Todd and Paul Littleton – whose wives are cooler than they are. Great people I wish I could hang out with regularly.

There are many others who have encouraged me, but you get the point; Lots of meeting going on outside of the meeting.

The Pastors’ Conference
The Pastors’ Conference was better than I expected. Whoever pulled it off is to be congratulated, and I hope we continue to improve. What was good? Mixing it up in terms of style was nice, but what I really appreciated was 1) the break out sessions and 2) that they brought in guys who emphasized preaching the Gospel in the language of the people to whom you are sent. I wont bother to tell you what I didn’t like. Others are covering that.

I have so much to say, but it will have to wait. Great, now my pizza is cold. No time for spell checks (sory jeff).

It was a pleasure to meet you this week, Joe. I hope you guys have a safe trip home.

  • David Dockery

Joe, you are so right about Greg and Kimberly Thornbury. They are some of God’s choicest people and gifts to the Union University community. Thanks for your kind comments about them–and about Ray as well!

Well, Joe, I was going to second what you said about the Thornburys. But it appears Dr. Dockery beat me to it. Dang. Oh well. You’re both spot on about those two.

Glad you guys had a great few days.

    Hey Joe,

Thanks for the updates at the SBC. I just read on Yahoo News that they passed a no alcohol resolution,

“Also Wednesday, the SBC unofficially barred members who drink alcohol from serving as trustees or members of any SBC entity.

The ban, part of a larger anti-alcohol resolution that was easily approved by delegates, was proposed by Jim Richards, executive director of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. While stopping short of officially preventing drinkers from serving, it “urges” that no one be elected or appointed to SBC offices if they are “a user of alcohol.”

“Use of alcohol as a beverage can and does impede the message of Jesus Christ” that Southern Baptists are trying to spread, Richards said.”

So I guess they probably have a hard time with ministries such as Theology Pub – looks like you’ll also never get to be SBC Prez. We are missing you and will be glad to be back together on Sunday.

Joe, Thanks for the updates. I really appreciate everybody keeping us non-attenders in the know. Sounds like you guys had fun.

Joe – I appreciate your blog, and just wanted to add my voice of thanks to your mention of Dr. Van Neste. I know him primarily through our current pastor, who was formerly a member of the church where Ray is an elder; and through the search process which led to our pastor’s hiring. Ray provided us godly counsel on several occasions. My respect for him (and his work teaching and training young pastors) is immense.

Tim, It was great meeting you (and your email was hilarious).

    Dr. Dockery,

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Rick,

Yes, it is a shame. I was planning on running for SBC prez next year! ;) Man, I have missed you guys and everyone at Grace. I am really looking forward to getting home.

    Joe,

It was great to see you and Steve. I wish we could have gotten together to talk. What I was wanting to hear from you guys I have heard through others, so I look forward to the continuing conversation on missional. It is great to hear others who are like-minded.
Thank you for making such a long trip down in order to continue the conversation.

    Joe,

Great to hang out with you and Steve! I am home and humbled after being around so many truly great men and women who are allowing God to work through them for His glory. I was challenged and encouraged. There was lots of talk about the “problems” during the convention and the solution of preaching the Gosple with clarity appeared to come out in a way that I hope was clear to everyone involved. Wish we were ministering closer.

It was great seeing you guys. I hope we can meet again (next year at the latest).
