WordPress 2.1

by Joe Thorn on January 25, 2007

WordPress 2.1, “Ella,” came out a couple days ago and I just upgraded. Man, now is the time to switch to WordPress.

What are some of the features of the new version? I’m still running version 1.5, I believe, and haven’t upgraded just because the old version does everything I want. But maybe it’s time to think about upgrading.

I should say, what are some of the features of the new version that YOU like? I read the link to see the new features.

Wow. 2.0 was such a huge improvement from 1.5. 2.1 is even better. At this point I don’t even remember what 1.5 was like.

WYSIWYG editing, theme admin pages, widgets, image uploading, blog preview in editing, autosave while writing a post (never lose a post again), spellcheck, pages can be used as the front page of the blog – making it much more usable as a CMS for a website, and a pretty log-in page. Really from 1.5 the whole thing looks and runs differently.

Pretty sweet template. I’m definitely tempted…

Hey Joe, does upgrading cause you to post three times? Because if it does, then count me in!

No actually I upgraded the other day. Loving it.

Yeah Joe, the triple posting was the result of a new plug-in I was playing with. Everything is fixed.

I’m just a wee bit nervous, when I upgraded to wordpress 2.0, I must have done something wrong as I lost my blog for about a day! Thankfully my server administrator, who also happens to be my friend, rescued me. But I’m not too anxious to update.

Joe (and anyone else for that matter),

Have you experienced any difficulty with inserting java based HTML in the text box widgets? Just curious because I tried installing Technorati and Sitemeter and could not get either of them to work. Most recently I gave Active Meter a try to no avail. I can insert the regular HTML code but it does not enable the plug in to perform its functions.

I am relatively new to WordPress (less than a month) and have found it difficult to figure that out, so any input would be appreciated.

I believe you would have to plug in a stat counter into the code of the main page php. But I use a wordpress plugin for stats. What are you trying to do with technorati?

  • http://www.timmybrister.com Timmy Brister

Well, just trying to get it in there somehow. Dude, I am retarded with stuff like that! The stats I tried (Site Meter and Active Meter) work but only show unique visitors and page views and nothing more (like incoming and outgoing links, referrals, etc.).

I have a Technorati account set up but wasn’t able to get the code to work in the text box. It seems like being able to embed HTML inside a template would be so easy (like Blogger). I wonder why they don’t give you the ability to do that.

Tim, are you hosted on a separate server, or are you set up at wordpress.com?

I’ve been using WP 2.1 & K2 0.95rc1 on another blog of mine… for any ‘code’ that you want to have run properly in the sidebar, I’d suggest using the “Sidebar Modules” (SBM) plugin. http://nybblelabs.org.uk/ It is built into the latest K2 theme, “K2 Sidebar Modules”.

Instead of putting java/html code into a Text module, use a HTML module for it. If you’re inserting PHP code into the sidebar, use the PHP module.

I’m finding SBM to be more versatile than the WP Widgets system..
