Friday Photo

back alleyThings are finally thawing out here, so I went out one night this week to shoot around town. This is an alley off of third street in DeKalb. The tilt to the picture is called a “dutch angle.” I am sure you care about that.

Heading out at night to take pictures, even for 30 minutes, proves to be a real blessing for me. It’s calming. It forces me to think about different things than my mind is typically given to and in different ways. Every once in a while, about once a month, I spend a whole day in Chicago walking miles and taking photographs.

Have a great weekend. Oh, and for extra photo fun you can see my most recent self portrait.

  1. Man your photography always inspires me to do more, to get better, to try new things, and to figure out how in the world you made your photos look THAT good.

If you could just stop being so good for a while so I can catch up…

  2. That’s a cool pic. It’s like a Dick Tracey thing or something. Also, on the self-portrait, I think The Thorn would need a mask of some sort. Maybe you can show us what that may look like. ;-)

  3. Thanks guys. Yeah Dan – the “dutch angle” is used in a lot of film-noir to give a sense of tension or psychological stress.

  4. “dutch” eh? I always call them “crookies”…Katie is not a fan of that angle, though I take great delight in it.

  5. The angle is definitely in.

Joe, you look very intimidating in your self-portait. Good thing you can remember my name! :)

  6. Hey Joe,

I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind giving me some info on your camera and editing software. I dig your pictures and my wife and I are looking at buying a second one so we can shoot together and do weddings and such. I’d appreciate it if you have the time.

    love the blog!

  7. Thanks Brandon. I do very little in post (b/w conversion, contrast, saturation) and use a cheap Nikon Program called Nikon Capture Editor (Like $70 on Amazon). I love my camera. It’s a Nikon D70s. I would get that, or the D80 if I were starting now. I list my gear (not much) on my Flickr profile page here.
