Church Business Meetings

by Joe Thorn on April 12, 2007

Scott Slayton at Scattered and Covered is asking for “ideas on ways to redeem church business meetings and make them times that actually build up the church?” Please go and share your thoughts. This could be a great conversation.

One thing we did (when I served in local church ministry) is we attempted to change the culture of a “business meeting” into more of a celebration time.

We changed the name from business meeting to MINISTRY meeting.

We published the financial reports as always – but instead of pouring over every line – we asked (required) each of our ministry leaders – preschool, children, youth, sr. adults, music, missions, benevolence, even many of the major committees (I know it was a LONG time ago) to give a recap of what they were doing for the KINGDOM in the last month.

It helped begin to change the climate from nickles and noses to Kingdom work.

That had to be tough to do but I think it would take care of most of the problems. It’s kind of a switcheroo to make it a time of testimony rather than a donnybrook but I like it.

We’ve done the same thing as David and Josh. We also moved ours from once a month to once a quarter AFTER prayer meeting.

We also constantly emphasize that the business of the church is what takes place on Sundays on campus and in people’s lives throughout the week.
