Run Report

by Joe Thorn on September 22, 2007

This morning I ran 5.1 miles in 56:03 (See route below). Not fast, but the run felt very good and I am still amazed that I am able to run this far at all – even more so that I can do it without stopping. Even more so that I truly love running! During the run I listened to a Tim Keller sermon, then the official Lost podcast, and the song “Are You There?” by Klint on my little iPod shuffle. Anyway, that brings the week’s total mileage to 16.8 miles. I started running 118 days ago. Two more days will mark four months and I have already passed the half-way point in terms of weight loss. ‘Not even close to being the kind of runner I dream of being, but I am on my way. For those who are interested, all my runs and times are recorded at Running Ahead. If you are new to running like me (and I know there are a few of you) you might want to start recording yous stats there too.

another great milestone! I bet your sermons are improving as well? Running has always allowed my mind to think through certain problems and ideas. It is funny how a run can inspire you. Also, love the new blog skin.

Thanks for these updates, Joe. I started running about 3 weeks ago (after a 10 year “resting period”). I’ve gone up to 4 miles, but I don’t yet have the endurance to do it without stopping to walk for a few seconds every once in a while. I’m hoping that will improve over time. This week has been tough for me. I’ve been fighting off a cold all week. I was supposed to log 18 miles this week, but I could only get 8 in. Supposed to log a 5mi run today, but I’m not looking forward to it.

Anyway, thanks for blogging this stuff. It’s encouraging to hear of your progress.

bj, I am finding numerous benefits to running: physically, mentally, spiritually. It’s been great.

Cameron, keep running man! Thanks for sharing. Your link above actually goes to my Running Ahead page. Were you trying to link to your own? Put it up if you were.

Joe, try the link again. I didn’t realize that I had to share my profile before anyone could see it. It’s visible now. Thanks!

I just finished my first 5mi run! Woohoo! The first 3 miles were difficult, but I found a good pace on the last 2. I normally run alone with no audio, but I stopped after 2 miles (I run a 1mi loop around my neighborhood) and grabbed my MP3 player. I’ll have to do some more tests, but I think Piper makes me run harder. ;-p

That’s awesome Cameron! It’s nice when we hit a new marker, like 5 miles, because we know we can do it, and can keep moving forward. Keller has been my audio lately, but I have gone from listening to nothing, to music, to nothing, to podcasts and sermons. Back and forth. I guess it just depends on where I’m at mentally. :)

Last night I tried running with audio for the first time and had my best run so far. I think it was a helpful distraction – the Catalyst podcast with Steve Fee.

    Great work Joe.

Joe, I stopped running in 2000 for many reasons. I was hard-core at one time. I started back a few weeks ago for the joy of running. I no longer run for miles, I run minutes. The reason I like to run minutes is that I don’t have to run a determine course. I also run out in the woods when I can get to them.

    Blessings
    Jeff
