Worship “Fail”

Sin has made men worship either (1) a false God, which is idolatry; or (2) God falsely, which is superstition. Man has become such a fool that his worship, till enlightened and converted, is either a breach of the First or Second Commandment. He fails as to the object or manner of worship, and both speak to man’s folly, that his religion is either idolatry or superstition.

  1. Not sure what your thought was in posting this quote.

If this was a Rorshach Inkblot, my “interpretation” is that this quote is an ominous black cloud over much of North America’s version of Christianity.

  2. Kelly, I initially got the impression you have a problem with this quote, but maybe not. So, for clarity - Has our sin not made us idolators? Are we not prone to worship false Gods, or the true God falsely? This is not American Christianity - in fact we don’t hear much of this here. This isn’t even 17th century English Christianity (which was Venning’s context). This is, in my estimation, the truth of Scripture.

  3. Joe,

I think the quote is absolutely true to Scripture. And, I believe it describes much of North American Christianity. I am inclined to think a false god which weakly mimics Christianity is worshiped, thus idolatry. And if God is worshiped then certainly falsely.

My comment meant that I, personally, read such a quote and feel an ominous cloud of judgment pending and judgment present upon upon us; the sense of God having given us over in our idolatry.

So, the only problem I have with the quote is that it too closely describes our present malady.

Thank you for posting a very timely quote.

  4. Kelly, thanks for the clarification. I got a better impression when I visited your blog. You and I see things the same way I think.
