Coffee is Good

by Joe Thorn on January 26, 2009

I love coffee. Black. No cream, no sugar. It’s my favorite drink. A Starbucks Americano (just espresso and hot water) is probably my favorite, but coming in a close second is the coffee I make in my french press at home. After that, gimme some of that Dunkin Donuts coffee and I consider myself very blessed. And now I find out that drinking coffee is good for my brain! I saw in the Men’s Health e-newsletter (I am not fit enough or cool enough to read the actual magazine) that those ubersmart euro-scientists are finding a link between coffee consumption and brain health.

Those Danish and Swedish researchers have found that people who drank three to five cups of coffee daily were 65 percent less likely to have developed dementia, compared with those who drank two cups or less.

Earlier studies have linked coffee to a variety of health perks that may contribute to this latest finding. Coffee drinkers have shown a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, less plaque formation in the brain, and reduced vascular risk—all three of these effects could contribute to lowering Alzheimer’s risk.

Right on! To celebrate this good news I am drinking more coffee today and posting a related educational video.

    Haha…

In Singapore we call normal black coffee, “Kopi-O”.

O signifying zero… with nothing added!

On “Coffee Is Good” . . . raise a mug of straight black, with a hearty (and clear-minded) “Here! Here!”

    Nice video.

Oh, and that Anthrax shirt – what year was that from? :)

That’s vintage brother. 1988. The same shirt I wore in high school. LOL.

I am thankful God “invented” coffee (don’t think Al Gore did??) as it helps me stay awake on Saturday nights as I prepare … I mean review my sermon for Sunday AM.

A friend (I think he is?) was in the Philippines last week and bought me a $50 jar of “civet coffee” or Kopi Luwak … best known as “cat-poop” coffee. The civet cat eats the choicest coffee beans and the beans are uhh well look at the name, and then they are harvested, cleaned, roasted and sold for big bucks. I haven’t ground the beans yet (sealed in a jar) … I just keep looking at them and wondering what it will taste like? Some say chocolate, but I got an idea maybe “chicken.”

Thanks for the coffee video! Nice work!

Great post Joe and I’m with you on the coffee. I think ‘French Press’ is what in the UK is called ‘Caffitiere’ (the French call it ‘Piston Caffitiere’).

I’ve got a little Star$ucks mug top filter that’s great and really quick to use. At home I’ve got one of those Italian aluminium pots that sit on the gas hob – now that’s great coffee!

Yeah, I was really happy to read about the positive benefits of coffee.
