On Repentance

by Joe Thorn on February 28, 2009

Our Theology Matters series continues this weekend at Redeemer and we’re focusing on the doctrine of repentance. Here are some helpful resources for those wanting to dig deeper. We call them “Relevant Reads.”

Repentance: The First Word of the Gospel, by Richard Owen Roberts.
This is a modern classic – a big daddy on the subject of repentance that is detailed and practical. Get it.

The Doctrine of Repentance by Thomas Watson
Classic, practical, a must have – and it’s short.

All of Life is Repentance by Tim Keller
A very short piece distinguishing between “religious repentance” and “gospel repentance.” What our theological fathers called “legal” vs “evangelical” repentance. Solid. Important. Download it, it’s free.

The Long War by Michael Horton
Repentance is a long, ongoing fight against sin – but our hope and confidence before God is not a successful battles, but the gospel of Christ. Read it online for free.

I’ve been blessed with the Roberts and Watson books on repentance. Both books are practical and must haves if you interested in digging deeper in this subject. Thank you for the articles as well.

In Romania born again believers are known as “repented”. And in our talk we don’t say “I got saved, or I accepted Christ” we say “I repented when I was 11 years old.”

We are ministers among street children in Bucharest the capitol city.

Cornel grew up on the streets, was saved in his 20s and now is in his 30s. I once asked him “Cornel, when did you repent?” He ignored me but I pursisted. “Cornel, when did you repent?”

He looked up at me with his one eye (the other lost in a fight) “David, I’m still repenting.”

    I understand how Cornel feels.
