Resources for Discipling Your Children

by Joe Thorn on January 11, 2012

Earlier this week I asked via Twitter, “What tools are you using to disciple your children?” Of course training our children in the way they should go is a holistic endeavor involving instruction, modeling, conversation, formative and reformative discipline, planned rhythms, and spontaneous exhortation (and, of course, the local church). But as a parent I am always looking for tools to help Jen and I shepherd our four children. And, as a pastor I am always looking to pass on those resources to others.  So I threw the questions out there and got some great feedback.

Below are some of the responses I got from friends on twitter. Those Jen and I have used in our home are marked with an *.

If you have other recommended resources for discipling your children share in the comments.

Thanks, Joe. Helpful stuff. We’ve used several of these as well, but there’s some new things here I’m not familiar with.

We’ve been using the Truth and Grace memory books since my oldest son was 2. Now that I’ve got three kids, however, it’s getting a bit burdensome to try to use it with each kid at their own level. I’ve been thinking about switching to a system in which we all memorize the same verses at the same time.

I’m finishing up my Doctorate at Southeastern right now on just this topic. I am more convinced than ever that the missing ingredient to “discipleship” is that the primary people to disciple children are paretns. However, what most people focus on in family worship is what the children need. The reality is it is the growth of father’s when they model the biblical pattern that I believe has the largest impact. In other words, think of you church leadership training if every dad in the leadership team opened and led in family devotions each week. Or take the evangelism “stuff” out there. Would churches really have evangelism 101 if dad’s thought it was their job to share their faith in front of their children in a manner that taught their children how to share. If father’s fulfilled their role in the family discipleship process and the five functions of the church happened in each home the local church would be transformed forever. I beleive the church has sinfully (with great intention) taken too much of the role of parents and parents have gladly let he church have it. Unfortunitally, when we don’t follow God’s pattern in any area (in this case discipleship) we get man made results. Family discipleship is the key to restoring true biblical discipleship in the church today!

Amen and we must do all we can to equip parents (and I would say fathers as well) to own this. So they need guidance, modeling, resources etc.

Here is what I give our men – but still doesn’t mean they will do it – we must show as well as tell.

    Westminster Shorter Cat…..

.We have a tune for every new question, during Christmastime all the qestions and answers were to Christmas tunes, both secular and hymns…It works, and one doesn’t have to remember the tune + the words….We also add to the end, a scripture reference, as part of the answer back….I didn’t think of that until question 37, so when we head back through we’ll add them.
This saves money and time, and the kids love to come up for the next tune.  It’s a progress in works.

Anything by Joel Beeke….God’s alphabet for life has been a hit, and I have learned a lot, since it’s so simple….Returning to a child like faith.

The Building on the Rock Series of Stories by Joel Beeke and Diana Kleyn

During Family Worship, we read straight through the bible and discuss.
sing hymns, say a creed, and pray.

Rod and Staff Publishing has a Bible Stories book, with no images of Jesus which is wonderful.  It also has a corresponding coloring book for children.

    Hey Joe–

FYI, I don’t believe the Story of God for kids is available as an audio resource. The link you provided is for the PDF.
