I have been reading John Calvin's sermons on the Ten Commandments this week. Very good stuff. Tuesday night I had a discussion with a friend from church while playing chess at a local coffee house. We wound up talking a lot about the need to not just hear from God, but to hear him often; to no just learn, but to re-learn as we go because we are often very slow to remember the things he teaches us. It reminded me of something Calvin said.

Hearing God's truth only once ought to be enough. However we do not believe as promptly as we ought, for no sooner than we begin we regress and ultimately forget what we have learned.

He is a gracious God who continues to teach sinners who are very slow to learn.
