Praise and Thanksgiving

While praying on my morning run today I got stuck on praise and thanksgiving (not a bad place to get stuck). My general thoughts could be expressed this way: Every good thing in my life is something for which I not only praise God, but also thank him. Praise and thanksgiving must always be together. For every good thing in my life, my family, my church, my home, my health, my dog, et al. are gifts from my heavenly Father. These are gifts I could not have earned from him; gifts I am unworthy of. And each of these gifts are meant to be received humbly and enjoyed enthusiastically. But each one should also lead me back to the Giver. You see, I think I am tempted to be thankful in general for the gift without being thankful to the Giver directly. But, true gratitude will always be grounded in God's grace and lead me beyond appreciation for the gift, to worship of the Giver. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17 ESV)
