One of the newer families to Redeemer Fellowship asked if I knew about the show, Diners, Drive-Ins', and Dives. I did! I don't watch it (guys with bleach-blond hair freak me out), but I know it. They said, "You know, they find these little, out of the way places. A place that's nothing to look at, but they have amazing food. Redeemer is like that! No offense."
I laughed and thanked him for the wonderful compliment. It's true. We do not have a handsome building. We have bad lighting, plain bulletins, and simple worship. But we give the people Jesus Christ, and like Jesus himself said, he is the food that satisfies and gives eternal life.
Don't misunderstand me. I am not against a good looking facility, nor do I think it is virtuous to be unorganized. In fact, we have outgrown the building we are in and are looking to relocate somewhere else in the city. This will not only mean a bigger space, but one that is much more functional and aesthetically pleasing. And with that comes issues we have not yet had to deal with in terms of attraction for the wrong reasons. That sort of scares me, so we are prayerfully and slowly moving forward.
But for now I am thrilled that people are coming to find Jesus and his people loving and serving one another. Even if it is in a dive.
