There are many men with beards in our church, and they have all made their way to a new shop in Batavia, IL called Beardsgaard. They've all not only told me how supremely satisfied they are with the barbers, but that Beardsgaard is their new home for all things beard and haircut. Yesterday I finally made my way there for a "beard overhaul." This is a little more than a trim, including some shaping and fading. But I didn't just walk in. In fact they are always booked at least a week out, so it's by appointment only.
You can make appointments via the website or by phone to the shop. I was set for Thursday at 4pm. Two days before the appointment I received a reminder email that was both helpful and funny. One day before my appointment I received a text reminder as well. You can opt out of this stuff, but it helped build excitement about my visit to Beardsgaard and would prove to rescue me if I forgot to plug the event into my iPhone.
Beardsgaard sits on Batavia Ave (Rt. 31) just north of Main St. Parking was not a problem. Upon walking in I was struck with how good it felt to be in there. The colors, decor, aroma, music, and over all atmosphere was simply pleasant. There was just the right amount of product to purchase (pomade, beard balm, etc.), so I didn't feel like I walked into an isle at the drug store. This is a proper barber shop with an appealing culture and skilled barbers who aren't just good at what they do–they actually believe in their craft and take pride in it.
I was early (I'm always early) so I relaxed on the leather couch and played with the shop dog a bit, and right on time Tyler called my name. I told him what I wanted and he went to work with the scissors and comb, trimming my vagabond beard into something more respectable. Thanks Tyler!
If you are local and looking for a classic haircut or beard care, Beardsgaard is the place. The men from our church have sat under the care of all three barbers, so I'm happy to recommend Tyler, Natalie, and Foley.
